Collecting Yixing Teapots

Build a useful Yixing collection by prioritising function, documentation, condition and personal taste over speculative investment claims.

A collection is easier to enjoy when you know what each pot adds. You might want dependable brewing pots, variations on Shi Piao, contemporary studio work or documented historical pieces. Choose a focus before adding more.

Know why you want the piece

Brewing function, craftsmanship and historical attribution are different reasons to buy. A pot can pour beautifully without being rare. An ambitious sculptural piece may be more interesting to study than to use.

Write down why you want it. If the answer depends on a famous maker, the attribution needs stronger evidence than a seal or familiar shape.

Inspect condition and records

Look closely at handle and spout joins, the rim and lid for hairline cracks, chips and repairs. Ask about replaced lids, restoration and previous use. For an expensive attributed piece, seek an opinion independent of the seller.

Request clear interior and exterior photographs, dimensions, practical capacity and an explanation of the forming method and material. Keep the listing and invoice. Certificates contribute only when their connection to the maker and object can be checked.

Keep a small record

Save the seller, purchase date, price, exact claims and condition photographs. Add the pot’s measured capacity and your brewing notes. Write “sold as zhuni” if that is all you know.

These records preserve details that memory tends to turn into certainty. They also help if you later sell or give away a piece.

Review the collection occasionally. Pots you no longer use or study can go to someone who will. There is no need to keep expanding it to remain interested in Yixing.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Are Yixing teapots a good investment?

Treat them as teaware or craft objects first, not guaranteed investments. Resale depends on attribution, condition, documentation, demand and the selling venue. Projected appreciation is not evidence.

How many Yixing teapots does a tea drinker need?

Many drinkers need only one well-functioning pot, and some prefer porcelain. Add another only when it offers a useful difference in capacity, heat behaviour, pour or craft interest.

What records should I keep for a Yixing teapot?

Save the invoice, seller description, dated photographs, dimensions, weight, capacity, condition notes and provenance documents. Record claims as claims unless independently supported.

Should an old Yixing teapot be used for tea?

Only after checking cracks, repairs, odours, residues and prior use. Porous clay with an unknown history may be better kept as a study object.
