How to Clean, Season and Care for a Yixing Teapot
A simple, low-risk care routine for new and used Yixing pots, including rinsing, drying, odour removal and mould prevention.
A clean new Yixing pot needs rinsing and gradual warming before use. You do not need to boil it in tea or give it an elaborate seasoning treatment.
Before the first session
Inspect the body and lid for cracks, repairs, loose clay and strong smells. Rinse inside and out with clean water, then warm gradually before adding hot brewing water.
If a chemical, perfume or mould smell persists after rinsing and open drying, contact the seller. Strong tea will only mask the problem.
After brewing
Remove the leaves, rinse the spout and filter, and drain the pot. A soft dedicated brush can help with trapped fragments. Let the body and lid dry separately with air circulating around them. Check that water is not sitting in the spout before closing the pot for storage.
Plain water is enough for routine tea residue. An object with unknown contamination, glue or previous non-food use needs assessment before brewing; “never use soap” is not a solution to that problem.
Let patina develop slowly
A soft sheen or gradual colour change can develop through handling and clean use. Sticky deposits and stale smells are residue to remove. Leaving tea on the exterior to dry can produce uneven stains and collect dust.
Boiling a pot in a pan adds risks of knocking and rapid temperature change, while tofu, sugar or other seasoning ingredients leave more to clean out. Normal brewing is simpler.
If it smells stale
Rinse with warm water, clean accessible surfaces and leave it open to dry for several days. Test with hot water and smell the empty cup. If the odour remains, stop using it until the cause is understood.
Warm a very cold pot gradually and keep the lid from rattling against the body during cleaning. You can use a few similar teas while learning the pot; dedicating it to one tea is optional.
Quick answers
Frequently asked questions
Do you need to season a new Yixing teapot?
No elaborate ritual is required. Rinse it thoroughly with clean water, inspect for dust or odour, warm it gradually and begin brewing. Regular use creates surface change over time.
Can you use soap on a Yixing teapot?
For routine interior cleaning, plain water is the safest default because unglazed clay can retain fragrances. If contamination requires detergent, use a minimal unscented product and rinse repeatedly; do not pretend water alone sanitises every unknown residue.
How do you prevent mould in a Yixing teapot?
Remove leaves promptly, rinse, drain and let the body and lid dry separately with good airflow. Do not store the pot closed while damp.
Should you boil a Yixing teapot in tea?
Usually no. Boiling risks knocks, thermal stress and uneven deposits, while tea does not authenticate or improve poor clay. A careful rinse and gradual warming are enough for a clean new pot.
Can one Yixing pot brew different teas?
Yes. You do not have to dedicate it immediately. Start with teas brewed at similar temperatures, rinse promptly and narrow its use only if side-by-side tasting gives you a reason.
