From clay body to finished pot
A Yixing teapot is the result of material preparation, forming, assembly, controlled drying, finishing and firing. Each stage affects the next. A beautiful profile means little if the lid binds after firing or the spout cannot empty the pot.
Preparing the material
Zisha materials are processed into a workable clay body before forming. Crushing, ageing, blending and wedging affect texture and working behaviour. Commercial labels such as zini or zhuni do not reveal the complete recipe, source, additions or firing schedule.
Colour in the finished pot is therefore not a transparent view of raw geology.
Full-hand slab building
In traditional slab construction, the maker prepares sheets and strips of clay. A round body may begin as a wall strip joined into a cylinder, then be paddled and supported into shape. Geometric pots use slabs and precise joins to establish planes and corners.
The base, shoulder or mouth, spout, handle, lid and knob are made and joined while moisture levels are compatible. Poor timing can produce warping or cracks at attachments.
“Fully handmade” should describe a process, not act as a quality stamp.
Mould-assisted forming
A mould can help establish the body shape while substantial assembly and finishing remain hand work. This can improve repeatability and make complex forms accessible at different price points.
The phrase “half-handmade” is used inconsistently. Ask whether the body, lid or decorative parts used moulds and who performed the finishing. Honest specificity is more useful than a hierarchy.
Finishing and surface work
Makers refine the lid seat, joins, spout opening and surface with specialised tools. Decoration may include carving, applied motifs, inlay or inscriptions. Functional finishing matters: the air path, filter, lid clearance and spout geometry determine how the pot behaves.
A perfectly polished surface can hide process clues, while visible marks can be added. Neither authenticates the method alone.
Drying and firing
Clay shrinks as it dries and fires. Attachments with uneven moisture or thickness can pull against the body. Firing then transforms the material and final colour while introducing another chance for distortion.
There is no single ideal firing result for every clay body. Assess a finished pot for cracks, warping, unpleasant odour, lid function and structural integrity.
